In case you haven't heard of it where you live, this is Cyclocross. Knobby tired road bike-ish...uh...bikes. riding around a set course lap after lap where you have to dismount and carry the bike up some hills and over barriers at least twice a lap. Sometimes they hand you beer! It starts in the fall rain or snow or shine and has been in full swing! People hand you bacon and sometimes beer while racing. What's not to like about this festive open-air concert style of event where there's grown-ups racing in the mud instead of live music. There might also be some live music. There's definitely beer! some are there to seriously race, some are there for the fun, some are there in costume. It's nuts, and i've got the goal to give it a shot next fall.

Yes! Definitely do this, I'm originally a road cyclist but I've done cyclocross the past few seasons too and I've loved it. Its a blast! The whole scene is amazing, everyone has a great time at these races, whether they're racing or just there to watch and root people on.

Here's a video from the race I was in last Sunday, the camera follows me for most of the first lap (I'm in the white and red University of Cincinnati jersey)

Edit: JOOEEEYY

It does look like a ton of fun. Also single speed cyclocross bikes are pretty cheap compared to race bikes.

I'm searching hard for the right parts, and you could piece one together for less than $300 and be competitive!
